Takeover schools to see Indiana funding bump

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

The state's planned funding process is projected to pay the private operators taking over four public schools in Indianapolis thousands of dollars more per student than what districts around the state receive.

Indianapolis Public Schools officials are projecting big enrollment drops at the three high schools and one middle school that the state is assigning to the private operators. But the state funding distribution is based on the previous year's enrollment.

Department of Education spokesman Alex Damron tells The Indianapolis Star that those schools are being treated the same as others and that the funding situation will be resolved after Dec. 31 with the use of updated enrollments.

Projections are that the operator of Arlington High School will receive about $8,400 per student. The state average is around $3,350.
