Elkhart wins award for theatre's restoration

ELKHART -

The northern Indiana city of Elkhart has won accolades from a preservation group for its restoration of an elegant theater that originally played host to vaudeville acts and silent movies.

Indiana Landmarks awarded city officials Sunday with its Cook Cup for Outstanding Restoration for Elkhart's restoration of The Lerner.

The theater, which boasts a white terra cotta facade, opened in 1924 as a silent movie palace with seating for 2,000 people. It reopened in May 2011 following an $18 million restoration that enlarged the building.

Indiana Landmarks President Marsh Davies said "downtown theaters once rivaled courthouses and churches as the most lavish buildings in the land." But he says too many of the old theaters have been demolished.

The Lerner is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
