Damaged gas line forces closure on Carmel Dr.

A broken gas line caused Carmel Drive to close down for several hours Tuesday.

The Carmel Fire Department responded to the scene at Carmel Drive and 3rd Ave. where workers accidentally cut a gas line at around 11:00 am. Carmel FD said the gas line lifted the road surface.

By around 12:30 pm, Vectren was able to stop the leak.

All area businesses will be checked for gas levels, although most had already been cleared. Only four commercial customers were without gas during the incident.

The gas line was 40 inches under the roadway.

Vectren says when a leak occurs where the ground is tightly compacted, the leaking gas will eventually find a weak location, and many times that is the asphalt surface.

It's unknown what the crew was working on when the gas line was cut.

Vectren will repair the line and open the roadway as soon as possible.
