INDIANAPOLIS -

An IMPD officer was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated Friday evening.

Metro police supervisors observed 21-year IMPD veteran Morton Gallagher driving his police vehicle around 9 p.m. Friday. Investigators believe he was leaving a location where he was working off-duty in his IMPD uniform.

"Initial observations lead supervisors to suspect he had consumed alcohol and investigators with IMPD's Professional Standards Division and DUI Unit were called to conduct an internal and criminal investigation," IMPD Ofc. Kendale Adams wrote in a release Saturday night.

Gallagher cooperated with investigators and voluntarily submitted to sobriety tests. He was subsequently arrested and preliminarily charged with misdemeanor operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was processed and posted bond. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will determine if formal charges will be filed against the officer.

Gallagher, who has been a member of IMPD since April 1991, is on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an internal police investigation.
