New exam to test students' critical thinking

Posted: Updated:
GREENWOOD -

Indiana students will shift from multiple-choice questions to essay-based tests that examine their critical thinking as the state rolls out new standardized exams that are being adopted across much of the nation.

The new test is being created by 24 states that are part of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College Careers. It will debut in Indiana in 2015 and is part of new academic standards.

The Daily Journal reports that teachers already are starting to use the new standards in their classrooms.

The new test will be administered online and is designed to better resemble technology-based lessons students already receive. It will replace the ISTEP exam currently taken by students in grades 3 through 11 and end-of-course assessments taken in algebra and English.
