Indiana tops nation in water pollution

ROCKPORT -

A new report by an environmental group says Indiana's factories topped the nation in toxic water pollution discharges during 2010.

The report by Washington, D.C.-based Environment America found Hoosier industries dumped more than 27 million pounds of pollutants into the state's rivers and streams in 2010. It also says AK Steel's Rockport mill alone discharged 24 million pounds of pollution into the Ohio River.

The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky., reports that the plant's discharges were more than two-thirds of the nation's total discharges into the Ohio River.

State Department of Environmental Management spokeswoman Amy Hartsock downplayed the big discharge number reported for AK Steel. She says the data reported to the federal government "cannot be used to draw conclusions to human health or the environment."
