2 girls wounded in NW Indiana drive-by shooting

EAST CHICAGO -

Police in northwestern Indiana say two girls were badly wounded when gunshots fired from a passing car struck them inside their home.

East Chicago Police Chief Mark Becker tells the Post-Tribune of Merrillville that the 10- and 11-year-old girls were "fighting for their lives" after the Tuesday night shooting.

Becker said the girls were alert but had no other information about their conditions after they were taken to separate Chicago hospitals.

Witnesses told investigators they heard a car driving on the neighborhood street, then gunfire about 9:30 p.m. No arrests were immediately made. Department officials said they couldn't provide updated information early Wednesday.
