INDIANAPOLIS -

The Loogootee Lions have won the first boys basketball state title in school history with a 55-52 victory over Rockville.

The Class A championship Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse was just their second finals appearance since the IHSAA departed from the non-class model in 1996, and fourth overall. They also were in the finals in 2005.

Looogootee (22-4) was led by center Conner Wittmer, who scored a game-high 16 points and added four rebounds. Bryant Ackerman chipped in 15 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.

A 17-9 first quarter set the tone for the Lions, who never trailed in 32 minutes. Rox juniors Lane Mahurin (19.6 points per game) and Gary Ulrich (12.0 points per game) scored a combined 28 points.

Rockville (22-6) made its first finals appearance since 1912.
