Southern Indiana officials say many residents in the tornado-ravaged village of Marysville will face costly septic systems upgrades even before they begin rebuilding their homes.
Clark County officials said homes destroyed in the March 2 storms are likely to need more effective and expensive sanitation systems to replace old septic tanks.
The Courier-Journal reports that many homeowners likely will be required to install new septic systems to obtain a building permit before doing any major repairs to their homes. Some lots may be too small for the systems.
Clark County Health Department Administrator Mike Meyer says the soil in Maryville won't support older-style septic systems, and many of the homes likely will require mound sanitation systems that can cost $5,000 to $6,000.
