CLARK COUNTY -

A New Jersey man faces charges after the Clark County sheriff says deputies caught him looting in a tornado-ravaged neighborhood in Henryville.

Matthew Smith, 35, faces a charge of burglary (B felony). He's being held without bond.

Henryville residents were cleaning up when they noticed a stranger in a home with a lot of damage. They questioned the man, later identified as Smith, and he said he was picking up copper so people wouldn't steal it.

But police say Smith was using a hacksaw to cut copper and placing it in a laundry basket. Witnesses reported his activity to police.

Smith attempted to flee into nearby woods, but many of those trees have been stripped bare by the tornado damage. He was caught soon after that.
