Indiana tornado victims urged to choose hope

Posted: Updated:
HENRYVILLE -

A priest urged churchgoers in a tornado-devastated southern Indiana town to choose hope over despair as they try to recover.

Bags filled with donated clothes filled the back five pews of Henryville's St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church as about 100 people gathered for a Sunday morning Mass. The only visible damage to the church is a six-foot hole in the roof covered with plastic, while the town's demolished school is about 100 yards away.

After the Mass, local insurance agent Lyn Murphy-Carter said she was urging people do everything they can to save their homes and property without waiting on contractors to arrive.

The National Weather Service says that two tornadoes - one packing 175 mph winds - hit Henryville about 20 miles north of Louisville, Ky.
