A student-run effort to document Camp Atterbury's history is entering its 30th year, and the new crop of researchers is preparing to interview soldiers and officers to document the military base's growth since the Sept. 11 attacks.
Students at Custer Baker Intermediate School in Franklin have reviewed binders of military information and interview notes describing the base's history as they update "The Atterbury File."
The Daily Journal reports the project began in 1982 when two teachers decided to use the military base as the focus of a research project designed to enhance writing skills and knowledge of local history.
A second project in 1998 painted an updated picture of the base.
The effort has been recognized by Congress and earned early participants a thank you from then-President Ronald Reagan.
