American journalist killed in Syria attack

HOMS, SYRIA -

Two foreign journalists including an American were killed during shellings in Syria.

Opposition activists inside the city of Homs say two Western journalists were killed Wednesday morning. They identified the journalists as veteran American war correspondent Marie Colvin, who's worked for many years for the British newspaper The Sunday Times, and a French photojournalist named Remie Ochlik.

The two journalists were apparently inside the city of Homs at a media center controlled by the opposition.

For the last several weeks all of Homs has been surrounded by Syrian government forces. They've been shelling the city from the outside.

The opposition controls a few pockets within the city and the media center was in one of those spots. It was one of the only places that had limited internet access.

The journalists were inside the media center when it was destroyed by a rocket apparently fired by government troops posted around the city.

Now in addition to those two journalists that were killed, three other reporters were also injured, one of them in serious condition. It has been very difficult for medical personnel to reach the scene because of the siege on the city of Homs.

Colvin, meanwhile, is being remembered for her fearless reporting from war zones. She wore an eye patch from an injury sustained during her reporting, and in what was to be her final report, she described the Syrian army shelling "cold, starving civilians." See that report here.
