INDIANAPOLIS -

Second Helpings expanded their hunger relief program Wednesday by dedicating a new kitchen.

The agency has doubled its capacity to serve children, adults and seniors in central Indiana. The kitchen expansion took six weeks and cost a million dollars.

Second Helpings can now serve 750,000 meals to hungry Hoosiers this year.

Those meals will be delivered at no cost to area Boys & Girls Clubs, Kaleidoscope Youth Center and the Edna Martin Community Center, plus many other social service organizations.

Second Helpings wants to help the 17 percent of Marion County residents who live every day without enough food.

"Second Helpings stepped forward 14 years ago because they know this is a solvable problem, and they've done incredible work to help solve the problem that faces this great city," said Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN).

Second Helpings also trains adults for careers in the culinary industry.
