NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -

Johnson & Johnson CEO Bill Weldon is retiring in April after coming under fire for a series of costly missteps.

A string of product recalls stretching over more than 2 years cost the health care giant hundreds of millions of dollars as well as consumer trust.

The maker of Band-Aids and biotech drugs says Weldon will remain chairman of the board. The CEO post will go to Alex Gorsky, head of J&J's medical device and diagnostics business.

The 63 year-old Weldon became CEO a decade ago, having spent his entire career at the company.

His tenure was tarnished amid an astounding string of more than two dozen recalls of nonprescription Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl and other drugs began in 2009. Medical devices and consumer products also have been recalled.
