KOKOMO -

A Kokomo man faces charges in connection with his girlfriend's death.

Travis Funke, 34, faces one count of voluntary manslaughter. He's accused of killing Kelly Armstrong, 29, with a hammer in July 2011.

Funke, who confessed to killing Armstrong, said he dumped her body in a Wabash County landfill. He's behind bars on unrelated charges.

Funke has an initial court appearance scheduled for Feb. 28.

Armstrong's disappearance prompted a huge search effort in Kokomo last year. Friends, family and volunteers spent the weekends searching cornfields and drainage ditches in Howard County in their search for the young mother.

Armstrong's sister and father appealed to the public last fall for any leads in the case.

Armstrong's body has not been found, although last week police searched the landfill several times.
