RICHMOND -

Eastern Indiana police are investigating the death of a Richmond woman who jumped from a bridge and fell more than 50 feet into a river.

Richmond Police Chief Kris Wolski tells the Palladium-Item the woman died after jumping from Richmond's South G Street Bridge into the Whitewater River about 5 p.m. Thursday.

Lt. Bryan Ervin identified the woman Friday as 40-year-old Julie Nobbe and said her death is being investigated as an apparent suicide.

Ervin said witnesses told police Nobbe jumped from the bridge, falling more than 50 feet into a shallow portion of the river. He said an autopsy will determine if she died from the impact, drowned or from a combination of factors.

Nobbe's relatives will be interviewed to determine why she wanted to take her life.
