Indianapolis not giving up on smoking ban

INDIANAPOLIS -

A Democratic city-county councilor is launching a new effort to introduce a tougher smoking ban in the city.

The move comes after the council failed to override Mayor Greg Ballard's veto last week. The mayor expressed concern over that version of the smoking ban because it didn't exempt private clubs like VFW posts.

Now Councilor Brian Mahern tells Eyewitness News he plans to introduce a new proposal at the March 2nd council meeting. His proposal would include key changes that he hopes would win support from the mayor.

Mahern's proposal would require the clubs to take two votes on smoking. The first would be whether or not to allow smoking in the club, and the second would cover allowing children and grandchildren of members to be inside a smoking facility.

Mahern feels that's a compromise because it addresses the health concerns of exposing children to secondhand smoke while recognizing the prerogative of parents to decide what their children do.
