INDIANAPOLIS -

An Indianapolis Metro Police officer surrendered peacefully after an hours-long standoff Tuesday morning. The incident prompted area schools to lock down and affected traffic on the city's near north side.

It started in the 3900 block of Illinois Street at Tarkington Park at around 8:30 am. Officers located their fellow officer who was distraught and walking in the middle of the park threatening to harm himself.

Officers set up a perimeter and called for the IMPD SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiation Unit. After several hours, they persuaded the man to surrender peacefully.

The officer is being evaluated at Wishard Hospital.

Initial reports indicated the officer had been in some sort of domestic dispute prior to the standoff.
