NEW CASTLE -

Republican candidates seeking the GOP nomination for the U.S. House seat Rep. Mike Pence is giving up to run for Indiana governor railed against President Barack Obama during their first debate.

Five of the eight 6th District candidates competing in May's Republican primary attended Saturday's debate at the annual Henry County Lincoln Day Dinner in New Castle.

The Palladium-Item of Richmond reports the five candidates were largely cordial to each other, but used the hour-long debate to hammer President Obama on what they called out-of-control federal spending and an escalating national debt.

Winchester financial adviser Don Bates Jr. drew applause by boasting he would "walk through fire" to make sure Obama isn't re-elected.

The eventual GOP nominee will face the winner of a five-way Democratic race in November's election.
