Gary owes its police, firefighters millions of dollars

GARY -

Unions representing police and firefighters in Gary say the city owes them millions of dollars in back pay.

Gary Fraternal Order of Police President Samuel Abegg tells The Times of Munster for a story Sunday that officers haven't agreed to a new contract with the city since one expired in December 2009. He believes officers are owed well more than $2.2 million in back pay because of raises that were promised but never received.

Gary Firefighters Union Local 359 President Raynard Robinson says firefighters have gone without a contract for about two years and are trying to recover money they believe they are owed from being forced to take furlough days.

New Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson says she hopes to resolve the contract issues soon.
