Since its opening on January 16th, the Jack in the Box restaurant near Greenwood Park Mall has been bustling. The food chain, open 24 hours a day, has had a 45-minute wait at the drive-through line at times.
Eillean Agag of Greenwood was surprised by the high demand.
"I couldn't believe how much the road was jammed. There was no getting into it," she said.
General Manager Angela McCormick says she did not expect this level of success.
"We have exceeded our sales goals four times the normal amount. I can't go into what sales we are doing but we exceeded them four times the amount of what any store is normally doing right now," she said.
In fact, the food chain is so popular that McCormick has hired an off-duty police officer to direct traffic in the drive-through line. The officer is usually directing traffic from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.
"It's just that busy all day," she said.
A quick check of some key statistics help explain the restaurant's success, however. Last year, the Daily Beast looked at hundreds of U.S. cities to see which had the most fast food chains. Among cities with populations above 200,000, Indianapolis ranked 22nd with 475 fast food restaurants.
A month after opening, the new Jack in the Box is still sparking interest of people far and wide. McCormick says they have had visitors from as far as Michigan and Wisconsin travel to the store because it was the closest location to them.
All those customers who waited in line and traveled far were pleased with their experience.
"Good, it is very good," Agag said.
The success of this Jack in the Box location has spurred the chain to open two more stores in the Indianapolis area. Locations in Avon and on 21st and Post will be opening at a later date.
