BLOOMINGTON -

Police say a 17-year-old Bloomington boy faces a felony charge after a rifle was found in his car parked outside a high school.

The Herald-Times reports the Bloomington High School North student faces one count of possessing a firearm on school property.

Bloomington police Sergeant Steve Kellams says school officials found the unloaded rifle in the student's car Tuesday morning after overhearing students talking about a possible gun in a classmate's car.

Kellams says the teen says he went target shooting the night before and spent the night at a friend's house before heading to school. He says he forgot that the .22 caliber rifle was in his car.

The student was released to his parents and his case has been referred to the county's juvenile probation department.
