Indianapolis prepares to begin cleanup from Super Bowl

INDIANAPOLIS -

The party had to end sometime. Indianapolis begins the task of cleaning up after Sunday's Super Bowl.

Workers on Monday will begin dismantling tents, removing decorations and hauling away trash the day after the city capped a week of festivities by hosting the big game, which the New York Giants won 21-17 over the New England Patriots.

At one point last week, four tons of trash were removed from Super Bowl Village.

Their work returning the city to normalcy will take days and will include reopening streets closed down last week around the Super Bowl village. The Indianapolis Star reports that most streets will be reopened by Wednesday afternoon. See current street closures.

The Roman numerals on Monument Circle, which attracted thousands and served as the backdrop for a Jimmy Fallon routine and The Today Show, will start to be dismantled Tuesday. The huge Lombardi trophy mural, which emitted an ethereal glow at night on the side of the JW Marriott, will come down next week.

Super Bowl Host Committee officials say total attendance at the Super Bowl Village during the festivities likely topped 1 million people.
