MONROE CITY -

The gymnasium of an old southwestern Indiana high school is being returned to its glory days thanks to $40,000 in gifts from Monroe City residents.

The Vincennes Sun-Commercial reports the former Monroe City High School's gym is getting a new floor and windows. Volunteer Tom Thompson says the goal is "for people to be able to step back in time to 1963 when it looked great."

After school officials agreed to save the school at the request of a local coalition, it was renamed in honor of James D. "Blue Jeans" Williams, who was Indiana's governor from 1877 to 1880.

The Blue Jeans Community Center is used for club basketball games, health screenings and music recitals in the town of about 600 some 50 miles north of Evansville.
