Two officers were injured and a suspect was killed in a police action shooting Friday afternoon near the Ball State University campus.

Police say the officers were fired upon around 2 p.m. Friday in the 1500 block of University as they pulled into the parking lot of a Village Pantry to make a warrant arrest. The officers were in an unmarked Chevy Suburban and were accompanied by a marked police car. The suspect, who had backed his car into a parking space in the store's lot, began firing shots through his windshield and into the windshield of the Suburban.

Officer Steve Baugh, the front seat passenger in the Suburban, was shot in the face. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The Suburban's driver, Officer Brent Brown, was hit in the shoulder in his bullet-resistant vest. He was treated and released.

The officers returned fire on the suspect, whose identity is unknown, striking him several times. The man was pronounced dead at Ball Memorial Hospital.

Police said in a statement that the Ball State campus was safe and "at no time was there a threat to the university community."
