INDIANAPOLIS -

Fifteen people have applied to become the next justice on the Indiana Supreme Court.

The court on Friday released a list of applicants for the vacancy that will be created when Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard retires in March.

The list includes seven women and eight men. Five are trial judges, and one - Cale Bradford - is a judge on the Indiana Court of Appeals. The rest are attorneys.

Excerpts from the applications will be posted to the Supreme Court's website next week.

The seven-member Nominating Commission will conduct public interviews of qualified candidates in Indianapolis on Feb. 8-10 and second interviews two weeks later. Governor Mitch Daniels will select the justice from among three nominees.

The Commission will then select the new chief justice.
