INDIANAPOLIS -

All outdoor stages in Indiana would have to pass inspections before any performances under a bill approved by a state Senate committee.

The proposal follows the deadly collapse of outdoor stage rigging during high winds at last summer's Indiana State Fair. Bill sponsor Sen. Tim Lanane of Anderson says he and other legislators were surprised to learn that no inspections were required for the large stage that collapsed Aug. 13 on state property.

The Senate's homeland security committee approved the bill Tuesday, sending it to the full Senate for consideration.

Indianapolis code enforcement director Rick Powers told the committee that current city regulations require inspections for dozens of temporary stages being put up for Super Bowl activities.

He suggested that the bill be expanded to include temporary indoor stages.
