BROWN COUNTY -
A six-year-old boy pulled from an icy Brown County pond has died, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources reported Monday night.
"Family members today reported that Trevor Wayne Young, 6, has died from injuries suffered in a fall through the ice that occurred on Sunday, January 15, 2012. Trevor died today at approximately 2:30 pm at the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis," DNR Sgt. Paul Bykowski wrote in a release.
Brown County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a 911 call that reported the boy had fallen through the ice in a pond Sunday afternoon. The pond is located near Spiker Cemetery Road, off of Valley Branch Road, southeast of Nashville.
First responders were unable to locate the child. Indiana Conservation Officer divers recovered the child from the pond at 3:45 p.m. He was taken by ambulance to Columbus Regional Hospital and was later airlifted to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.
Young was listed in "very critical" condition at Riley Hospital late Sunday night. Police say he was in 15-20 feet of water for about 45 minutes before the rescue.
Principal Lucy McGrayel of Van Buren Elementary School near the town of Stone Head tells The Republic newspaper Trevor is a "happy, precious kid" and the community is praying and "hoping for a miracle."
Six police and fire agencies assisted conservation officers in the recovery.
