Jerrod Jones made a layup as time expired to give Ball State a 70-68 win over Toledo on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals (10-4, 2-0 Mid-American Conference) led 66-63 with 1:04 to play, and Tyler Koch hit a 3-pointer to tie it with 45 seconds remaining.
AJ Mathew, of Ball State, then blocked Julius Brown's jumper and Jones converted both free throws at the other end for a 68-66 Ball State lead.
Reese Holliday tied it up for Toledo (8-8, 0-2) with 7 seconds left, but Jones was able to get free for the game-winner.
Jones, who averaged 17.5 points during Ball State's last two games, finished with 22 points, 15 coming in the second half, against the Rockets.
Jesse Berry added 18 points for the Cardinals, 12 coming in the first half.
Rian Pearson set a Toledo record with seven steals, and also had 19 points.
