The father of the only survivor of a roadside bombing in Afghanistan that killed four members of an Indiana National Guard unit says his son is in a drug-induced coma at a Virginia hospital.
Gerald Rachowicz said Sunday night his 29-year-old son, Pvt. Doug Rachowicz of Hammond, is in serious condition with multiple injuries.
He says his son was driving a van Thursday morning in southern Afghanistan during a mission to clear a combat route of roadside bombs when it struck one of the bombs, killing the four other men in the truck.
Rachowicz says his son has a 6-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son. They won't be able to fly out to Virginia to see their father yet, but other family members were at his bedside.
