IPFW holds on for 72-67 victory over rival IUPUI

Frank Gaines had 22 points and six rebounds, and Mario Hines scored 14 to help IPFW hold on for a 72-67 victory Thursday night over in-state rival IUPUI.

Justin Jordan added 12 points for the Mastodons (9-6, 3-3 Summit).

Alex Young, the leading scorer for the Jaguars (8-9, 2-3) coming into the game, had 25 points - including four 3-pointers - and six rebounds. Ian Chiles added 13 points, but IUPUI fell to 0-6 on the road.

The Mastodons were up 37-27 at halftime and led the entire second half, but IPFW pulled within 68-65 on a Young 3-pointer with 18 seconds left. Gaines and Jordan each hit two free throws to seal the win.

IPFW shot 54 percent (26 of 48) from the field and got 37 points from its bench, helping the Mastodons win despite committing 21 turnovers and shooting 57 percent (17 of 30) from the line.
