Wounded officer returns home from hospital

WATERLOO, Ind. -

A northeastern Indiana police officer is now recovering at home two weeks after being shot in the face.

Waterloo Deputy Marshal Stephen Brady has undergone surgery to repair jaw and mouth wounds from the Dec. 15 shooting while responding to a call about a couple with car trouble.

Town Marshal Jay Oberholtzer tells The Star of Auburn that Brady returned home Tuesday night. Oberholtzer says Brady is walking and writing, but isn't talking much because he's still using a trachea tube and breathing apparatus.

About three hours after Brady's shooting, police found a couple hiding behind a nearby house.

Police say 41-year-old Ralph Hardiek pointed a gun at officers, who then fatally shot him. Thirty-three-year-old Julie King was badly wounded and remains hospitalized.
