Judge okays Kokomo annexation

Updated:
KOKOMO -

The City of Kokomo is officially getting bigger.

A judge has ruled in favor of Kokomo's annexation process. East and west side residents challenged the city on the legality of the action, but on Wednesday, Special Judge Thomas Lett issued his final order in favor of the city.

The city's expanded borders result in its population increasing to over 56,800. It will now incorporate 30 square miles within its boundaries, although city leaders say Kokomo remains one of Indiana's most densely populated cities.

In state population rank, Kokomo jumped to twelfth position surpassing the cities of Lawrence, Mishawaka, Greenwood, Elkhart, Noblesville and Anderson.

Residents in the east side annexation will receive letters next week explaining when city services will be provided. West side annexation residents were also contacted.

The city says over 70 percent of the annexed areas are already receiving sewer and fire protection from the City of Kokomo. City services will be provided before any taxes are collected, as the new city residents will not pay city taxes until May 2013.
