Without Bayh, Dems fight over future, 2012 races

INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana Democratic Party Chairman Dan Parker's decision to announce his resignation and then rescind it just five days later has exposed tensions in the party that could hint at what awaits Democrats if they lose critical 2012 elections.

Nearly a quarter-century of top-down leadership by former Sen. Evan Bayh and Parker has left many Democrats thirsting for new leadership. The party lost its only U.S. Senate seat last year and has not held the governor's office since 2004. Democrats are outnumbered 6-3 in the congressional delegation and are in the minority in the state Senate and House.

Parker and former state Republican Party Chairman Mike McDaniel say it's natural to have tension over electing a new leader.

McDaniel says the key is to reach more consensus with party leaders.
