Southern Indiana teen gets probation in school vandalism

A southern Indiana teenager who authorities say joined four juveniles in breaking into and vandalizing a high school has been sentenced to four years of probation.

The Madison Courier reports 19-year-old Zachary D. Shaffer pleaded guilty to one count of burglary for breaking into Madison Consolidated High School. In exchange for his guilty plea, Shaffer was sentenced to four years, all of it suspended on probation.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Shaffer and four juveniles broke into the Madison high school July 8, vandalized eight classrooms with graffiti and stole $60.

Aside from probation, Shaffer was ordered to pay fines and fees totaling $830, along with a $60 civil judgment for the money he stole and $790 to be paid for the damage caused to the classrooms.
