INDIANAPOLIS -

Trimming the tree and decorating the home are some of the most enjoyable traditions of the holiday season.

"The holidays can be very stressful as it is, so bringing in someone that can help you hang holiday lights that checks one more thing off your to-do list," said Angie Hicks, Angie's List founder.

This service is offered seasonally by landscapers, roofers, and handymen. Some companies specialize in holiday decorating.

"These companies are typically less busy during the holidays and have the equipment necessary to hang the lights properly," said Hicks.

That includes ladders and electrical lifts. Your design determines the cost.

Paul Evan is with Earth-Wood Arts, an Indianapolis landscaping company.

"There are a few things that go into it. Of course you have your basic material costs depending on our design that we decide to do. That will determine how much we need for each item - like for the steps. Each side of this required two pieces of garland and a bow and several lights," said Evan.

In addition to the materials, the homeowner must also give the decorator access and information that ultimately keeps the family safe.

"Generally what I need from the homeowner is access to the power sources and I need to know what else is on these power sources so I'm aware of my electrical limitations and I need access sometimes to the house so I can determine that to see what else might be on the outlets or what my limitations are," said Evan.

Here are a few do's if you decide to hire a holiday decorator.

Call early in the season.

Make sure the company is insured to protect you against any falls or accidents.

Know the company's maintenance policy for any possible repairs.
