Manhole cover explosions reported downtown

INDIANAPOLIS -

Emergency crews are on the scene of at least two reported explosions involving manhole covers downtown.

The scene is located near Maryland Street and Delaware, just north of Conseco Fieldhouse. One vehicle reportedly caught fire as a result of one of the explosions. As crews investigated the first explosion, another cover blew up beneath a fire department pick-up truck.

"I didn't hear anything. The car just was on fire. It was just smoking by that point, but somebody said that it blew up, so I don't know. It's just one of the manhole covers, it's nothing to do with the car or anything. It melted off my brake," said the car's owner.

Several streets have been blocked off in the area due to the explosions. Police are blocking off two blocks in all directions from the intersection of Washington and Delaware. That area is marked by Market Street to the north, South Street to the south, Alabama Street to the east and Delaware Street to the west.

Utility crews have also been called to the scene. IPL workers will likely shut down power to some areas of downtown to fix the problem.

"We've gotta be very careful with the amount of water we throw on these, because it can do two things. It can cause a secondary explosion and electricity can travel through our hose stream and injure firefighters. So there's not much we can do until the power's cut and that's what we're waiting on right now," said IFD Capt. Eric Hofmeister.

Saturday's explosions are the latest in a series of underground explosions in downtown Indianapolis this year:
