Lafayette driver convicted in teen girl's hit-and-run death

LAFAYETTE -

A Lafayette man has been convicted of driving drunk when he ran over and killed a 15-year-old girl who was walking on the shoulder of a road.

A Tippecanoe County jury returned guilty verdicts Thursday against 43-year-old Robert Kirts II on charges of drunken driving causing death and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

He was arrested a day after Ebony Knight was hit the night of Feb. 27 while walking with a cousin back home after buying school supplies.

The Journal & Courier reports that authorities weren't able to test Kirts' blood-alcohol level, but employees at two bars and his wife testified that he had been drinking that night.

His attorneys argued that prosecutors couldn't prove he was intoxicated or driving recklessly when he hit the girl.
