Officer shot, suspect killed in shoot out

Steve Jefferson, Eyewitness News

Indianapolis, December 30 - It all started with a call to police. John Brisco heard gunshots. He believes the suspect was shooting at his niece.

"He started shooting her house up. He shot up her car," said Brisco.

The shooting happened just after 11pm Monday in the 68-hundred block of Faris Avenue.

After a short car chase in the area, the officer and suspect exchanged gunfire.

The gun battle happened in Park Forest Apartments. The officer was shot once in the chest and he is only alive because he was wearing his bullet proof vest.

The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene. He was located on the top of a carport in the 45 hundred block of Park Forest.

Crime Lab workers will number bullet casings on the ground to determine how many times both the suspect and the officer fired their weapons.

The officer, 29-year-old Adrian Aurs, was treated and released from a local hospital.

The suspect was identified as 23-year-old Justin Coates.
