PERU, IN - Two men from Akron, Indiana were killed in a crash in Miami County Wednesday morning.

It happened at around 11:15 am at US 24 and State Road 19. Police say James R. Winters, 76, was hauling a boat trailer in a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck westbound on US 24. Winters was turning south onto SR 19 when his truck was struck by an eastbound 1994 Mack flatbed truck hauling concrete blocks. The Mack truck was driven by David Carter, 38, Monticello, IN.

After impact both vehicles came to rest in the ditch on the south side of US 24. Winters and his passenger, Robert T. Benzing, 21, Akron, IN, were pronounced dead at the scene by Miami County Deputy Coroner Todd Burns. Carter was not injured.

All participants in the crash were wearing seat belts, but the impact was too severe for the restraints to save Benzing and Winters.

Police do not believe alcohol or other drugs played a role in the crash, which is still under investigation.

David Carter was driving for Carter Concrete Block Inc. based in Logansport, IN. The Mack truck did not lose any of its cargo during the crash.
