Two teens die in Carroll County crash

Updated:

DELPHI - Two teenagers died in a fiery two-car crash in Carroll County early Sunday.

Police say a 1997 Chevy Cavalier driven by LeAnna Martin, 18, of Logansport, was driving north on SR 25 two miles north of Delphi when the vehicle went left of center into the path of a 2004 Lexus driven by 43-year-old Jeffrey Wittig of Granger. Investigators say Wittig tried to avoid the oncoming car by driving off the right side of the roadway, but was struck head-on along side the southbound lane of the road.

The Cavalier caught fire and Martin and her passenger, 17-year-old Aubrey Whistler of Logansport, were still in the vehicle when emergency crews arrived. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene and Whistler was transported to IU Arnett Hospital in critical condition. She was later flown to IU Methodist in Indianapolis, where she died of her injuries Saturday afternoon.

Wittig was transported to St. Elizabeth East Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
