NORTH VERNON - Authorities say a body discovered in a remote wooded area of southern Indiana has been identified as a man who had been camping in the area near North Vernon.
The Republic of Columbus reports the body was identified during autopsy Wednesday as 40-year-old Scott Hess of North Vernon. X-rays of a plate in his arm helped identify the body.
The newspaper says the body was found Tuesday by a relative who went looking for him because he hadn't been heard from.
Jennings County Coroner Brian Sawyer says the cause of Hess' death is undetermined. The coroner's office is awaiting results of toxicology tests.
Sawyer says Hess had been dead more than a week. He had been camping in the area for a couple of weeks.
Bloomington police Capt. Joe Qualters said Wednesday that he had talked with sheriff's officials in Jennings County to confirm that it was not the body of 20-year-old Lauren Spierer, an Indiana University student who went missing June 3 after a night out with friends in downtown Bloomington.
