INDIANAPOLIS - There are 14 million Americans who aren't taking the day off work this Labor Day - because they don't have a job. Millions more are working part-time but need a full-time paycheck, and millions of others have just given up looking.
We're talking about nearly one in ten Americans. That's more than 15 million people and over 300,000 Hoosiers who would much rather be working this holiday weekend.
Roughly a third of unemployed workers have been out of a job for a year or longer. The Center for Law and Social policy found that a third of all part-time workers had their 40-hour work week cut, or they can't find full time jobs.
A recently released study found 30 percent of workers are worried they will be laid off, and 33 percent fear their wages will be cut.
Another Study from the Center for Law and Social Policy found there is just one job opening for every five people looking for work. Of 14 million unemployed workers, a third of them - four and a half million people - have been out of work a year or more.
Angie Cantrell has been coming to the unemployment office ever since the family carpet business went out of business. Her year-and-a-half job search has been futile and frustrating.
"There is no face to face. There is no interview. It is all computerized. You don't know if people get your resumes because you don't hear anything back. I haven't even once got a call, an offer or anything," said Cantrell.
Angie hopes her unemployment benefits are extended. She and her husband are dipping into their retirement savings
"We've sold our house, moved into an apartment. Just taking it day by day, trying to survive," she said.
Unemployment is expected to remain high well into the new year.
