MARION COUNTY - Indianapolis has found a new way to promote local artists, and they are using the Super Bowl to launch it. Super Bowl XLVI is 157 days away but we are already seeing new murals around the city.

Right now all over the city, artists are rolling out their gear and putting their artistic talents on display with murals in celebration of the upcoming Super Bowl.

"It's so amazing. I was so thrilled to be in the yes pile. I'm so lucky. I am glad they opened it up nationwide. It's an amazing city. They've done so much downtown," she said.

While the project is a tribute to the upcoming big game, 46 murals for the 46th Super Bowl, the themes vary.

"We are hoping that each of the artists, and we've seen this at some of the sites, working with community, about what's unique and what's special about that neighborhood and how can they celebrate that through creation of the mural," said Dave Lawrence, Arts Council of Indianaoplis.

Augustine Droze is an artist from Los Angeles who is also painting along the downtown canal. She's painted murals all over the world, but never a project quite like this.

"It is unique. I've never seen a program that has done this many murals at one time, 46 murals, it's crazy. It's great; I love it! I wish more places would do it," she said.

Not all of the murals will be located along the canal. They'll go up all over Marion County. One large mural is being painted on the side of a building at Penn and New York.

Back along the canal, local artist John Dumont, who has an art gallery downtown, is putting the finishing touches on about 300 hours of work. He hopes his piece, called "Indiana Love Letters," conveys the pride Hoosiers have in their home state to all the visitors.

"I wanted to do a story about rural life in Indiana, life, who we are, some of the joy that we have, some of the fun we have, the changing of our seasons," said Dumont.

All the murals are expected to be up for the next ten years. The murals will be painted all over the county the next several months and should be finished by the time winter hits.
