INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana State Fair officials say attendance at this year's tragedy-marred state fair fell about 8 percent over last year, with about 80,000 fewer people visiting the fairgrounds during the 17-day event.
State Fair spokesman Andy Klotz said Monday that preliminary figures show 872,312 people visited this year's fair, which ended Sunday. That's down 8 percent from last year's attendance of 952,020.
On Aug. 13, powerful winds ahead of a severe thunderstorm toppled stage rigging at the fair's Grandstand just before a scheduled performance by country band Sugarland. Four people died immediately and a fifth person died hours later.
On Friday, a 22-year-old Ball State University senior became the accident's sixth fatality. A 24-year-old cheerleading coach from Ohio who remained on life support Monday was expected to become the seventh fatality.
