INDIANAPOLIS - An Indiana State Fair spokesman says officials were on their way to the stage to announce a mandatory evacuation when a 70 mph wind gust collapsed the metal structure, killing five people and injuring dozens of others Saturday night.
Fair spokesman Andy Klotz said Tuesday that fair executive director Cindy Hoye and State Police Captain Brad Weaver had decided to evacuate the grandstand two or three minutes after an emcee warned the audience that rough weather was moving into the area Saturday night.
Klotz says the stage collapsed before Hoye and Weaver could reach the microphone to order an evacuation.
Klotz says Hoye narrowly missed being caught in the collapse and credits Weaver with saving her life.
The structure collapsed as country duo Sugarland was preparing to take the stage.
