Fair cancels activities after fatal stage collapse

Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana State Fair has canceled its Sunday activities after a deadly stage collapse.

At least four people died and dozens were injured Saturday when a strong wind gust toppled the rigging on the stage where country band Sugarland was scheduled to perform. The towering metal scaffolding fell onto fans waiting for the band to take the stage.

Indiana State Police 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten says the fair has canceled its Sunday activities. Only fair workers and those needed to care for animals will be on site.

Bursten says the fair expects to reopen Monday with a memorial service for the victims.

The fair runs through Aug. 21.
