Ex-ND assistant hospitalized after standoff - 13 WTHR Indianapolis

GRANGER - Police say former Notre Dame football defensive coordinator and NFL player Corwin Brown has been taken to a hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a nearly seven-hour standoff at his Indiana home.

St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Commander Tim Corbett said Friday night he did not know whether Brown's injuries were life-threatening.

Police say they heard gunshots inside the home when they arrived about 1 p.m. in response to a reported domestic dispute. Brown's wife and children exited the house sometime later and police say they began trying to talk him out using cell phones and a bullhorn.

WNDU-TV reported that Brown walked out onto his front porch around 6 p.m. Friday with a gun, but returned into his home. A source told the television station Brown was inside the house alone.

That came after someone used a bullhorn to urge a person inside the home to "Be a Michigan man today. Step up to your obligations." WNDU identified that man as Bob Chmiel, a former coach of Brown's. Brown was a standout for the Michigan Wolverines and went on to play for the Patriots, Jets and Lions in the NFL.

Property tax records show the home in Granger is owned by Brown and his wife, Melissa.

Brown was Notre Dame's defensive coordinator from 2007 to 2009, until head coach Charlie Weis was fired. The 41-year-old coached defensive backs with the New England Patriots last season, but was not retained.
