New calendar greets IPS students

INDIANAPOLIS -

Parents and students have had to do some re-adjusting to be ready for the new IPS calendar which starts the school year early.

It's called a balanced schedule.

That means summer break will be eight weeks instead of ten, but the number of school days stays the same. So it's not exactly what you would call a year round school.

We caught up with some IPS families as they took advantage of a back to school event at the Indiana State Fair. Organizers were teaching kids how to get on and off the bus safely.

We asked one dad about the new IPS school calendar and how it will affect their lives.
He said, they just won't know until they try it,  but that it does cut too deeply into summer.

"(It's) in a way unfortunate." said parent Rick Panepintl. "(It) kind of eats into the traditional summer...and traditional summer activities we like to participate with the kids."

IPS Superintendent Eugene White says the new schedule will help students with failing grades, that a shorter summer will help ease the summer brain drain.
